Action-packed, fun-filled, and sometimes challenging, my first month at Hello Future has been a rewarding experience that has taught me many new skills and life lessons.
After finishing my master’s degree, I was uncertain about my future career path and was equipped only by my love of books, writing skills, and university experience. Consequently, the graduate intern role at Hello Future was perfect for me. From creating social media content to collating school data, my various job responsibilities allow me to try new things and experience different workplace activities. It is great to be involved in so many different aspects of Hello Future in their mission to share information on higher education to the young people of Cumbria.
So far, my favourite new experience is creating social media content. It’s something I had never considered doing in a workplace before and had never put much effort into my social media content before. Likewise, making a video for social media, with my face and voice in it, was a very daunting idea. However, as the dreaded day allotted for making my introductory video for social media came, I embraced the creative opportunity of the task and went for it. I recorded videos, created a voice-over, edited my content, and added background music. These were all skills I had never tried before and, although not perfect, created an introductory video for Hello Future’s social media. This was a really rewarding experience that I thoroughly enjoyed and feel inspired moving forward to be more involved in social media content creation. Watch it here!
I haven’t started delivering workshops yet as it’s been the summer holidays. However, I’ve been working closely with Phoebe (the graduate intern for Carlisle area, find out more about her here) to create new activities and resources for our workshops. The strong teamwork and collaborative attitude are important parts of Hello Future’s ethos that I love, especially since the whole team are so friendly and are always ready to give me a helping hand. I can’t wait to meet the young people of Cumbria in schools soon and hopefully share my knowledge of higher education in a fun and interactive way.
This role is perfect for learning on the job. With my English Studies background, I was certainly a technophobe (someone afraid of technology), but now I can use excel with ease, conduct Microsoft Team’s meetings, and even use Canva without fear! My confidence in using technology and understanding data has certainly increased and I know that this will be pivotal to my future career. If you don’t know what you want to do next or feel like you don’t have all the skills for the job you want, don’t worry! It’s never too late to learn something new!
I’m excited to see where my Hello Future role will continue to go and can’t wait to go into schools to share all of the exciting higher education opportunities and activities with everyone! Make sure to follow the Hello Future Instagram and Facebook to e-meet me and look out for updates on future events.
