Construction/Engineering progression routes

This section will explore progression routes related to construction and engineering. 

Progression routes in construction and engineering encompass a wide variety of subjects and courses. For example, college courses at level 2 and 3 including bricklaying, carpentry, Extended Certificate in multi construction trade, and T Levels in Engineering. A Level subjects related to engineering/construction include maths, further maths and physics. 

There are lots of apprenticeships available including intermediate and advanced apprenticeships in bricklaying, welding and project management. There are also 120 higher and degree apprenticeships in the engineering sector in England including:

  • Sellafield Degree Apprenticeship Schemes (Project management/ Engineering design)
  • BAE Systems Degree Apprenticeships (Project Management/ Aerospace Engineering) 

Similarly, there are a variety of university courses available including: 

  • UCLan: BEng (Hons) Building Services and Sustainable Engineering
  • University of Cumbria: BSC (Hons) Project Management
  • Edge Hill: BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering

A progression route in construction or engineering means you will gain transferable skills like: resilience, communication and adaptability. These can be applied to careers in a variety of sectors.
